About
John Malcolm
John has been writing songs for many years and his abilities were recognised
when he won a song writing competition in the Scotia Bar, Glasgow, during
the city's year of culture in 1990. More recently a song of John's "Odd
Sox Blues" was performed by Alistair McDonald on the Scottish TV
show "Northern Nights" and his Dundee exile song "THe Old
Town" featured in the BBC Radio programme "Unbelievable Dundee".
John is also a member of the folk group Cruachan whose CD "Loose
Change" was highly recommended in the Scots Magazine. The band have
played festivals in Holland and France as well as at home here in Scotland.
A fefw years ago John also teamed up with old friend, author and
story-teller, Stuart McHardy, to perform a show at the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe entitled "Drink Edinburgh Dry". The two-man show, a celebration
of drink through song and story, was described as "one of this year's
wee gems" in the Scottish Daily Express. John teamed up with Stuart
again to perform another Fringe show "Whiskey in Words" at the
Crown Plaza Hotel.
As a solo performer John sings and plays guitar. A feature of his material
is its variety. Traditional Scots and Irish songs are mixed with the Blues
and songs of American singer/song-writers such as Dylan, Paxton and Prine.
John will provide a transatlantic session all on his own. Now writing
more of his own material John has given up on his day job to concentrate
on his music and performs to appreciative audiences at folk clubs throughout
Scotland. His debut album "Bridges"and his latest album "Sands of Time" are available from this
site.
Originally from Dundee, John has lived in Strathhaven for the past
twenty years and is a member of the Lanarkshire Song Writers Group who
have produced several cds and performed at various arts venues. Under
the auspices of the New Makars Trust, John has worked with children in
schools throughout South Lanarkshire helping them to write their own
songs.
